An incredibly rare and intricately carved wood table made in Japan for Liberty & Co, c 1905. Ā These tables were commissioned by Liberty’s at a time when there was a fashion for all things Japanese. They were hand carved by Japanese fishermen, made in numbered sections for easy packing and transportation, and assembled at the “Eastern Bazaar” in their Regent Street headquarters in London. Ā These tables were advertised as part of their “Hand carved and inlaid woodwork” range of goods in the Liberty & Co Yuletide gifts catalogue Ā (1913).
