A true antique, this is nearly 500 years old and dates to the late 16th century. With an impeccable provenance from the Van Gerwen-Lemmens Museum, it was listed by Sotheby’s following the museum closure in 2008. Made of oak, it will have been used as a scribe’s desk or a rent desk, with two useful cupboards for storage. Used for display in the modern home, it will make a marvellous piece to show books, pictures, manuscripts or music, but is also a comfortable writing desk to stand at.
– All original, including the locks and hinges.
– Panelled, with fluted sides at back and front.
– Large cupboard at the back, with single fixed shelf.
– Small cupboard at one end.
– Museum inventory label inside small cupboard door.
– Will need to be placed centrally in a space, rather than against a wall, for cupboard accessibility.
In good condition showing wear consistent with age and use. The small cupboard door has a key, but tends to be difficult to open if closed. No key is available for the larger cupboard.
