Selenite is a unique mineral. It is not a stone with a wonderful color like some natural stones, but it has other features that made it enchant humanity with its beauty centuries ago. It is a colorless, very clean and noble type of gypsum with an amazing pearly luster. Selenites are both very pure, colorless crystals of this mineral, as well as its fibrous variety.
The name comes from the Greek words selene (moon) and lithos (stone). Selene is the goddess of the moon in Greek mythology who roamed the night sky in a silver chariot. She was also the personification of the moon itself (the ancient Greek word selene meant moon). The name selenite refers to the exceptionally beautiful shine of this mineral, which resembles the moonlight. Selenites sometimes show a cat’s eye effect.
The chemical composition of selenite is CaSO4 2H2O, so it is hydrated (dihydrated) calcium sulfate. The density of this mineral is 1.5–2 g/cm³, and the hardness of selenite on the Mohs scale of 10 is 2–2.2. It is characterized by very good, unidirectional cleavage and pearly gloss. The color of this mineral after powdering (the so-called scratch) is white.
Properties and operation of selenite
