What is the antique style?

The antique style of furniture, and antique items more generally, is more to do with age than style. This is an important starting point to be aware of. While you can easily purchase items that may have an ‘antique’ or old-looking appearance, an authentic antique is something that’s over 100 years old.

Victorian, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Renaissance Revival, Neo-Greek, Gothic, there are a variety of styles that you can choose from which were created from periods of time longer than a century ago. All of which are full of character, charm, and historical stories.

Like modern furniture, all antiques were made for a purpose, not simply to be admired – although I’m sure that’s what you’ll find many of your home visitors will end up doing – therefore pick your items carefully and ensure that they add a practical value, as well as an aesthetic one.

When I started Hunt Vintage, alongside my co-founder, one of the questions we were asked frequently was around the cost of antiques; ‘but no one can afford antiques?‘ or ‘antiques that are in home-worthy condition are too hard to find’ and while there might be some truth in these statements, we exist to prove that’s no longer the case.
