Description
A wonderful 19th century mahogany military campaign chest in two sections which was made for Captain William Olpherts. This handsome chest is a rare find with a historically important connection.
ā The original owner went on to become the highly decorated General Sir William Olpherts, VC. The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious decoration in the British honours system.
ā Two short and three long drawers across the two sections, each with recessed handles.
ā Both the top and base are inlaid with brass tablets which are engraved Captain Olpherts.
ā Brass corners and side fittings.
ā The four turned feet are removable with turned threads to each of the pegs allowing them to be unscrewed and removed for travel.
In good condition with the wear consistent with age and campaign use. No key is available. The piece has a lovely colour and the characterful patina expected from long use.
