The 19th century French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye is renowned for his bronze sculptures of animals and mythological figures. His output was prolific and he created more than 500 works during his lifetime. One of the most iconic images produced by Barye is a whippet sculpture, which has become one of the most recognized examples of animal art in the world.
Barye’s whippet sculpture is both powerful and graceful at the same time, capturing an energy that is often seen in dogs in full flight or chasing after prey while they remain still but alert. This original work was crafted in the late 19th century using a combination of modelling techniques and lost-wax casting process to create a unique piece that stands just over 11 inches tall. It has since become one of the most sought-after items for collectors looking for pieces from this period.
